It’s all a bit seedy

Monday

I think I may have done too much exercise last week that required me to be bending over as my back was really aching today. Also generally feeling at bit under the weather. I’ve now got the reading materials through for my new job so after my obligatory conference calls I decided I would wrap up warm back in bed and read up.

Matt’s done some work chasing the first of the gaines into the back wall. It seems that he has also uncovered another mystery box of permanently live wires. Since some of these appear to be wired directly into the mains we are going to have to find some time during the day where we can fully shut off all the power to the house to try and work out where these go.

Looks as though that gives us the rest of the evening off though which is nice.

Tuesday

Happy Birthday daddy! If he was still here he’d love working on the house – and he happened to be pretty damned good at it too, particularly the upcoming plastering.

Busy day of work today. It seems that today is also ‘Internet Safety Day’ – yes, apparently that is a thing. I’m guessing that this was dreamed up by schools to give them a reason to talk about how kids can be safe online, online bullying that sort of thing. However, Matt’s work has chosen to have a lunch to celebrate it. Naturally, civilised society is getting Deliveroo and Uber Eats, the provinces are somewhat bleaker. Matt did an early trip to Intermarche and it seems that we have… Chicken donuts for lunch…

Since Lidl has some seeds in at the moment I figured I’d best have a good look through what I have already and work out if I need any more. It took quite a long time to catalogue them but seems I have quite a few. I probably don’t need any more vegetable seeds or we’re going to need half the garden for the new veg patch.

In the evening I set about starting to pull together a seed planner. The first step is research: hardiness zone, last frost, space requirements, height, depth, germination, and harvest. Just starting on it has taken forever. At some point I’ll also need to start measuring up the garden so that I can start to put the physical plan together.

Wednesday

Despite a busy day we managed to find an hour or so during the day to turn all electrics off. Seems however as though something is still pulling power, we have no idea how or where from though. Seems it may be one of the basement ones but not entirely sure.. Managed to disconnect a few of them however which is was something.

Thursday

Found the time for a trip down to Luchon today to go to Lidl. In addition to seeds, the specials this week are tools so Matt got fully stuck into those while I was left unsupervised. I imagine you can guess what happened next… Yep – 24 packets of flower seeds for companion planting with all those vegetables to attract pollinators.

Matt also picked up an electric sander and some peg boards which will eventually go on the workshop walls to store tools.

    1. I’m pretty sure that we’d be happy very with ‘his way’ in return for the plastering, amongst other things in the house, and he’d be really handy for fixing the ride on lawn mower – although he’d probably have taken it apart down to every last screw just to have a look at it. It’d be much like the never ending jobs at the farm 😉 He’s missed every day, and twice on Sundays! xx

  1. Safer internet day – ha ha, I’d forgotten all about that – reminded me of my former life as an ICT teacher. This must be the first Feb in the last 10 years were I have not had to do a ‘Safer Internet Day’ assembly to the whole school!

The mystery power source sounds intriguing – maybe hook in the rest of the house in if its bypassing the meter 😉

    1. It’s running through the meter but not sure how or to where. It just keeps moving round when the kill switch has been flicked so something is running somewhere… Out of interest – how good is your french in describing electrocutions to paramedics if I happen to find it first? Matt’s going to need a translator 😉

  2. Wow you are going to be busy gardening. Hope you don’t have rabbits.
Sow some of your flower seeds as a wild field/garden. These are always surprising and stunning.
Loving your posts although the mystery electrics make one nervous. Keep warm. Xx

    1. Funny you should say that, but I have seeds for that too! Not sure where we will put them yet as need to prep the ground a bit first as they don’t like to compete with grass. I wonder if wildflower pots might work in the short term?!
