Making gaines

Regular Sunday morning. Matt is up before me, I lay in bed and caught up on some TV. But soon enough noon rocked around and he still hadn’t popped his head in to see ‘if i was thinking about getting up soon.’ He clearly hasn’t started on the holes in Room 4 for the gaines as I would certainly have heard him. Intrigue got the better of me and I went downstairs to investigate. Ah, he’s reviewing the spreadsheets and what we need to order… This is a never ending task and he is the master.

Since I am now up though it is time to crack on. We have been making good progress though and need to finish up what we started with the gaines. Skirting off and trenching in. Thankfully Room 4 has access to the old chimney from the kitchen so can run the network cables down there.

Lots of poking and prodding of gaines up, down, and across but I think we now have them all in. Thankfully it’s much easier today since Matt has got the new batteries for the radios and they are actually charged.

After a quick walk around, and some musing while the kettle boils for the 5th cup of tea, I decide I realise I can’t compromise on the additional switch for Room 4. If you are a parent coming in at the back of the room you need to be able to turn the lights on/off right?! Having it by the main door isn’t going to work – kid’s aren’t exactly known for putting things away and your lego or nano blocks could lead to the whole house being woken.

Although (comparatively) Rooms 3 and 4 [the family suite] are relatively small, for that floor at least, there are potentially more ways of rearranging the (not yet purchased) furniture. I have therefore had to hedge my bets with where I want things. I know that I can have 1, 2 or even 3 data points now for example, if I want to add another one later though…. Let’s not even go there!

It’s finally started to clear outside, just before it gets dark, but Matt and I enjoyed it.

Of all the jobs we’ve done today agreeing the naming convention for the gaines was one of the most challenging. It’s going to be very important when we finally get everything run down to the board. There’s going to a massive spaghetti junction of cables and we need to know what they are attached to at either end.

Rang Mum.

Next job was to make a start on the insulation. Since it is glass wool it requires full kitting up to cut it into strips and put it up into the void. Very excited to finally have some up even if we didn’t get as far as we may have hoped.

Once that’s done it’s time to disrobe from all this protective gear and have a shower to get rid of whatever came off the insulation, I don’t fancy having shards of glass in my bed.

Time for another big tour of the house. You have no idea how many times we can do this, and all the numbers change every time.

The aim was to simply confirm how many data points we need. [If it’s <16 then they come in a nice, handy, pre-made made box, BUT if it is more you cannot have two boxes it needs a custom design – we need 22!] Thankfully, the boy is a networking genius because I have no idea what is going on, I just point at corners and say what will go in them.

He’s getting grumpy so it’s time to put the oven on. Canapes! Genius, I hardly needed more. Matt however took to my suggestion of the end of bread bowl, he was not disappointed [and I got the the inside]

After dinner Matt spent all evening ordering bits while I mused again on the design and conferred with the girls. What do you think… should we get a traditional roll top style bath, slipper bath or this one?

    1. You are a family of giants though! 😉 I do tend to prefer a bigger bath though, if you’re going to go to that much effort there’s no point only being able to submerge a tiny little bit.

  1. Roll top is more in keeping with the house and may not date – but if you are having a modern shaped basin and toilet then the bath in the picture is very nice

    1. Yeah, it’s a challenge. I think we need to continue to try to sensitively mix both old and new. My other consideration is the cleaning – roll tops are beautiful but harder to get around and clean. I am generally minded that it would be better to be a bit more modern and clean
